Question: What is "secure deletion"?
Answer: "Secure deletion" utilizes USDoD-compliant 7-pass, or 35-pass Gutmann algorithm to overwrite existing data before deleting them. "Secure deletion" applies to temporary files, as well as original files (if you enable "Delete Original"). It effective prevents other people from undeleting and recovering any information.
Please be aware that it takes a relatively long time to securely delete the files. The "Secure deletion" in goSecure is identical to SRM in Mac OS X.
Question: How secure is goSecure?
Answer: goSecure uses 128-bit AES encryption. AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is extremely secure and popular, and is selected by the NSA for classified data. It is currently in use by many government agencies and companies worldwide. You can find more information about AES here.
Any encryption solution is only as secure as your passwords, so choose your passwords carefully. You data will be more secure if you make your passwords hard to guess. Here are some tips:
- Avoid easy to guess words - Do not use common dictionary words, or information that is easy to find (like your name) as the password
- Use symbols in the password, and add spaces between words to make them harder to guess
- Use longer passwords - It is harder to guess a phrase or sentence
- Use different passwords - Do not use the same password for everything
- Use phrases that are easy for you to remember, but hard to guess
Question: I cannot remember my password, what can I do?
Answer: Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do. There are no backdoors in goSecure, and the password is not saved after the encryption is completed. It is impossible for us to "crack" your archive. If you forget the password, your best bet is to try out your possible passwords. See the previous question for password tips.
